Knowing where to find grants to pay off student loans can really be great help in maintaining financial security and keeping down your student loans.

In this hub I want to go over some useful information if you don’t already know about government assistance for low income families and using grants to pay back student loans sooner.

What is a grant? A grant is an amount of money that you can be given to help you with financing your education that you typically don’t have to pay back. Basically its free money!

Who can get grants? A grant is most often awarded based on financial need and other factors. It is important to note that it is not only financial need based; there are other factors involved. For example there are many opportunities to receive government help for single moms.

You never know if you could be eligible for some kind of grant so it is always worth checking!

What kinds of grants are there? Well there are many different areas in regards to grant eligibility. Here are some of the major categories:

• Need based
• Merit based
• Studying abroad
• Sponsored grants
• Field specific grants
• Student types
• Athletics grants
• Housing grants

These are just the major categories! Within these main categories you will most likely find at least one grant to which you can apply for.

Within the student type category there are a lot of great subcategories that may be relevant to you. They are: minorities; women; adults; people with disabilities; non-traditional students; and students with sever medical conditions. I made sure to mention these categories because it is so easy to overlook the possibility of receiving free money just because of your gender or even being an adult student for example.

There really are a huge number of different grants from a huge number of different sources with varying requirements for eligibility. It could be worth 100s or even 1000s of dollars to spend a little time, do a little reading and apply for a few grants. A great deal of them don’t even require much additional effort beyond applying and the benefits you will receive are huge.
